Affirming therapy for same-sex parents navigating parenting stress, partnership, and family life.

You worked hard to build this family. It can still feel hard.

It’s been a long journey to becoming a parent.

Now there are school pickups, work deadlines, sleepless nights, and everyone’s schedules to keep track of.

You have parenting stress and the added layer of being an LGBTQ+ family.

You love your children. You may also feel exhausted, stretched thin, and you feel the toll that being a parent has taken on you and your relationship.

You keep track of the calendars, appointments, and the emotional load. Your partner feels criticized or unsure how to help. Conversations become logistics, and you miss feeling like partners.

Being grateful for your family doesn’t mean you have to pretend everything is great.

Whether you’re two dads, two moms, a single LGBTQ+ parent, or navigating a blended or separated family, you deserve space to talk honestly about what parenting brings up for you.

Does any of this sound familiar?

  • You’re tired of intrusive questions, school forms, or having to explain your family.

  • You feel you have to be the “representative” for gay parenthood and are always on display.

  • You feel less recognized as a parent because of biology, labels, or other people’s assumptions.

  • You fear how the world will treat your kids and feel guilty when they are treated differently.

  • Relatives don’t fully respect your family, your partner, or your parenting decisions.

  • There’s pressure to be extra perfect because of stereotypes, biases, and the political landscape.

  • You feel stuck between the gay world and the parenting world.

  • After caring for everyone else, there’s little energy left for closeness or intimacy.

  • Parenting teamwork has turned into scorekeeping, resentment, or the same arguments.

  • You carry the mental load but struggle to ask for what you need.

You can love your children and still miss parts of your life or relationship before parenthood.

There’s the parenting. And then there’s the explaining.

A school form assumes a mother and father. Someone asks which of you is the “real” parent. A relative treats one parent as less important.

You may find yourself deciding when to speak up, when to protect your privacy, and how to help your children feel secure while making room for your own hurt or anger.

Not every same-sex-parent family has the same experience. Even within a partnership, one person may want to challenge a comment while the other wants to keep the peace. That difference can leave you feeling alone with something you hoped you would face together.

Therapy offers room to understand one another and become a stronger team as you build your family.

You deserve a space where you can express yourself without having to explain or represent gay parenthood.

What We Can Work On Together

  • How to show up authentically as partners and parents.

  • Grieve past wounds that parenthood is bringing up in you.

  • Build a stronger connection and understanding of your partner.

  • Setting boundaries with relatives and responding to others as a team.

  • Finding parenting roles that fit your family, without relying on gender expectations.

  • Making room for connection, intimacy, and repair.

  • Navigating new parenthood, blended families, or co-parenting transitions.

A Space For LGBTQ+ Parents

As a gay therapist, I offer a space where your family can just be and feel accepted. We can explore how you can be the best parents and partners you can be, and create your family culture in a world that might not be so accepting.

My relational, present-focused approach draws on NARM. We can explore how the past or pressure to get everything right show up in parenting, while making space for choice, boundaries, and connection now.

A Few Questions Before We Meet

Is this therapy for our children?

This work focuses on supporting the adults in your family. If your child needs their own therapist, we can discuss what kind of support may be appropriate.
